ILTA 2007

Who's Driving the EDD Bus
Michael Worth
August 22, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

There are so many components involved in the electronic discovery process, primarily the individual business units, various technologies and the legal aspects surrounding the process. This panel discussion begins by introducing the concepts and issues surrounding the new Federal Rules of Civil Procedure as well as the legal department’s need to educate, orchestrate and guide the overall process. To ensure business units are making valid decisions and the IT organization is implementing technology in the proper manner, the legal department needs to educate these groups so they are aware of the repercussions of their decisions and are prepared to respond to electronic discovery requests. The panelists discuss their real-life experiences in this area, including both the right and wrong turns along the way.

Pandemic: Protecting Your People and Your Business
John Tsiofas
August 22, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

When planning for disaster, most firms focus on the technology, office space, communications and other crucial business functions. It is assumed that staff will be there to help the business recover. However, if a significant portion of your people are not available, then your strategy must change. We provide some background on the pandemic risk and what makes it quite different from other risks to your business. We then focus on strategies to protect and leverage your people. Changes needed to operational areas of the firm in order to protect your business will also be discussed.

The Latest Technologies in Law Firm Data Center Design
Charles Ottenweller
August 23, 10:30 AM- 11:30 AM

As several technologies have matured they are enabling more firms to benefit from centralizing their IT infrastructure. What technologies are impacting firms’ choices? What issues should you consider in planning your firm’s next infrastructure? What benefits have firms realized and what hidden challenges have they overcome? What are the costs and challenges in moving your data centers outside of your offices? How do the costs of a centralized data center model compare to the costs of a distributed network model? These questions will be answered and the technological advances that make this possible will be discussed: server advances; new entry-level SANs and data replication strategies; strategies to provide systems that are highly available; redundant networks; expanding data center options; network accelerators; metro area networks and Citrix advances.

A panel moderated by Michael Worth, Strategic Consultant at Kraft & Kennedy, Inc., discusses how they are working toward implementing ECM and the challenges that they have faced along the way.  The panel consists of the following:

Merging, Moving and Expanding - ILTA '06: Evolving Together Conference, August 23, 2006

Today’s legal market is a complex mix of mergers, moves and expansions, all of which are essential to firms maintaining competitive edges. These initiatives have significant IT components relating to hardware and logistical challenges, but the firm’s strategic direction is becoming increasingly important to IT. John Tsiofas, Strategic Consultant at Kraft & Kennedy, Inc., and Michael Fick, CIO at Jones Day, share ways to make these initiatives effective vehicles for change and why they can’t be approached as pure technology projects because culture, egos and politics need to be addressed head-on to prevent problems that could linger for years.
